Information on Public Utility Companies
(Electricity, Gas & Water)
Once you have moved into an apartment, you are responsible to sign up with a utility company of your choice.
We are happy to do this online for you as all the websites are in German. There is a variety of packages and offers which can be confusing.
In order to make an informed decision, we have put together the main providers.
Berlin’s traditional provider for electricity is Vattenfall (electricity and gas). Vattenfall generates its electricity from a mixture of sources, including nuclear power. The other provider in Berlin for electricity is Berliner Stadtwerke (www.berlinerstadtwerke.de). They generate their electricity from wind generators and solar panels.
Berlin’s traditional gas provider GASAG does accept new clients. The alternatives are Vattenfall and a few other companies like eprimo. Eprimo, for example, still guarantees a price for 12 months.
There is only one provider for water - www.bwb.de - called „Berliner Wasserbetriebe“.

The tariff for drinking water supply consists of a base rate and a quantity rate. The base rate is charged for the provision of the water supply system (waterworks, pumping stations, pipelines etc.) and the water meter.
The base rate is calculated per day and is dependent on the size of the main water meter (QN/Q3) as well as the additional annual water consumption in the case of water meters up to a size of QN6/Q3 10.
The following applies:
The larger the water meter, the higher the base rate.
The quantity rate is calculated per cubic meter based on the drinking water consumption (1 m³ corresponds to 1,000 liters).
